Cool tips for improved typography in your design
A document is known by its typography. Its affects the way reader perceives
a document. Therefore, designing the typography requires some state of the art thinking by people who know what the reader is going to expect from a certain kind
of document. There are some cool tips that a certain designer can follow while designing
the document:
Make sure that a line is of the average length: A long line breaks the reading
flow of a reader who finds it difficult to go through long lines. A line should
not contain more than 80 characters. Its better that a line does not contain more
than 65 characters.
Ensure the correct leading based on font: Leading i.e. the space between the
successive lines of different types in a document also plays a crucial role in its
typography design because it affects the readability. There are various factors
that affect how much space should be introduced between consecutive lines in a
document.
The leading also depends on the size of the font used in a document which
varies with the respective font type. The rule that should be followed by
designers while deciding the leading is that it should be 2-5 pt more than the
font size of the document. For example, for any document, when the size of the
font is 12 pt, it should have a leading of 15 or 16 point.
The measure or the line length about which we discussed earlier should also
ensure what should be the leading in a document. If the line length is more,
greater should be the leading in a document. Its because with longer lines, more
space is needed between them to maintain concentration of the reader.
The leading in a document also affects its typographic color, which is the color
of the font introduced on the document after printing. This typographic color
actually includes the density of the font.
No widows and orphans:Widows is the short word left at end of the page
when the paragraph ends. It makes the ending paragraph on the page look
awkward. The designer should ensure that there are no widows on the page by
adjusting the font size so that no single word is left alone at the end of a
paragraph. Widows can also be removed by adjusting the line breaks so that all
the lines get completed when the paragraph ends.
Just like widows, orphans also ruin the look of a page when the 1st paragraph in
a page begins with a single word.
Reduce the emphasis because they distract the focus of a reader-Its
important that the emphasis is reduced to the minimum. You should avoid using
italics as and when in the paragraph.
So, these are the cool tips that any graphic designer should follow to see that
his page has the right look for the reader. Although there are many software like
Adobe Illustrator available in the market to get the right design for a page, these
cool tips can help a lot.
