What is mental health all about?
Mental health is one of the most widely discussed problems these days. Mental health implies that a person is healthy at an emotional level. Being mentally healthy is actually how we feel all the time. Mental health is paucity of any kind of mental disorder. Having a proper mental health is important.
Its because how we feel has an effect on every aspect of our lives. When you have proper mental health, you are able to feel everything in life, you are able to savor it. A person with good mental health is able to get a balance between the activities of daily life and having an emotional resistance. He does not get broken down easily. However, mental health problems can arise in a person irrespective of the age. Mental health is integrating oneself with the environment he/she is living in. As per WHO, the definition of mental health is that a person is able to do some conducive work and is able to give his inputs to the society and also relishes life, which implies he has a good work-life-love balance. However, mental health problems can happen to any one of us, whether we are rich or poor, or old or young. That is the characteristic of such problems. Such problems can also happen irrespective of the gender. Today, 20% of Americans mental health issues every year. As per an estimate, in US, 9.8 million of those aged over 21 had a severe mental health disorder.
Differentiating between mental disorders there are many such as schizophrenia, anxiety related disorders and mood disorders. Anxiety disorders which are a common disorders a person has a phobia of a specific situation. Those who succumb to their anxiety try to stay away from a situation which is responsible for their condition. Phobias are also a kind of anxiety disorders which actually are of many types. Social phobia(what will others think of me), agoraphobia(a phobia of being able to get rid of situations).
Obsessive compulsive disorders also exist, where a person has an obsession with something and compulsions to wash hands again and again. Mood disorders such as bipolar are also prevalent where a person has a change of mood, from being extremely happy to being extremely sad.
Often such people have to take medications for controlling phobias, OCD and mood swings which are irrational.Post traumatic stress disorder is also common nowadays where a person has been part of a scary event and cant get over it.
