Emergence of facial recognition software in 2020
Have you ever seen a camera scanning your face and a person matching the results with the computer? If yes, the technology is known as the facial recognition software. With the onset of the coronavirus, when the biometric recognition feature through fingerprints has been rendered completely useless, the facial recognition software is likely to see an upward trend.
The face detection process occurs in the following three steps:
• Face detection starts identifying faces and it stores the information in an analog form.
• The next is the face capture process where this analog information is converted into a digital form.
• The last is the face match process which checks whether the face stored in the database matches the face of the person just captured.
The facial recognition feature works to detect faces based on many characteristics such as the shape of the lips, and the gap between the eyes.
Since the facial recognition feature will not involve any kind of conversation, it is preferred to talking to identify someone through voice recognition software. The Apple iPhone users have already been introduced to this facial recognition technology which was used to unlock the phones.
The first time, the University of Hong Kong developed a facial recognition software wasin 2014 which was quite successful in recognizing faces. However, it had the flaws that it required a lot of memory to store a face. The name of the algorithm developed by the researchers of this university was given the name Academia.
Many developments are happening in the market of facial recognition software. These include the development of software by software giants such as Google and Facebook.
Development efforts by Facebook
The social media giant Facebook has also come up with facial recognition software. It detects whether two images stored in its database belong to the same person. It is known as the DeepFace algorithm and has a success rate of 97.53%.
Development efforts by Google
Google has also come up with a facial recognition software which has a high accuracy rate. This accuracy rate is equal to 99.63%. This software allows you to recognize faces based on an algorithm. This software is now used in Google Photos which helps in tagging pictures based on the images of the person to which they belong. Google has also released this software in an open-source version(OpenFace) so that it can be used for biometric purposes.
Development by US Homeland Security
The US Homeland Security also didn’t want to be left behind. It did some tests in the Maryland Test Facility to come up with facial detection software. It also released the results of these tests in May 2018. These tests checked the performance of 12 facial recognition software. It found out that the test results given by the software known as the Thales Solution gave excellent results with a 99.44% success rate. It recognized a face in less than 5 seconds and only had an error rate of 1%.
Facial recognition is used for many purposes which are listed below:
• Facial recognition is quite important when providing identity documents to someone. Anyone who commits identity fraud is caught through this facial recognition software. It is because the fingerprints of a person can be changed and are not the true mark of someone’s identity.
• Facematch is also employed at border checks to evaluate whether the authorized person is crossing the border. It scans the face printed on the biometric passport with the actual face of a person stored in the database. Earlier fingerprints were used to detect the identity of a person while he was crossing the border, but since the fingerprint was easily copied, this technology could not be used any further.
• They can also give a pace to investigations by finding suspects. Facial biometrics technology was also used to catch a serial killer. This happened in the year 2016 when the person behind the Brussels terror attacks was caught due to the facial recognition software employed by the South Wales Police in the city.
• In the United States, in 26 states the facial recognition technology is employed to check the identities of those holding driver’s licenses. The FBI can use this data stored in its database. It has rights to such information about driver’s licenses of 18 states.
• Sometimes drones equipped with such a camera lens can also identify a serial killer from a far distance. The software integrated with a public security camera can be used to discover missing children. This kind of software can detect a person by using face changing technologies to match the past appearance of a person with his recent face. They can also detect criminals by recording their activities.
Employment of cameras in China
Chinese cities are at the top positions when it comes to employing street cameras to capture the movement of citizens. China has started using facial recognition technology on a large scale. It is getting used in airports and banks. The Chinese police are now planning to use facial detection equipped sunglasses. The cops are already using them in the rural areas of Beijing.
China is using surveillance cameras all over the country. These surveillance cameras will be installed with the facial recognition software. Since this software will recognize the people’s faces and build a database, it will easy to keep a track of all the people involved in any kind of activity. In the year 2020, 626 million surveillance cameras will be used all over the country.
Employment of cameras in Asian countries
Other Asian cities are not left far behind when it comes to the installation of cameras. These cameras will be the major highlight of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 when there will be allowed to provide an entry to authorized officials and athletes into the Olympics venue.
India is also planning to launch facial recognition software. The government (National Crime Records Bureau) is already inviting proposals from the various software vendors. These face detection cameras will be installed at police stations. And this data will be available at the NCRB data center. This way, police stations will be able to coordinate each other with the aid of the data accessed through this data center.
